The history of war is as old as the history of human civilization. Man destroys his peace to ensure it! The Flowers of War, a 2011 Chinese historical war film makes me think about such atrocities during the attack of the Japanese on the Chinese. This film opens in a war time. It’s the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. It’s the period when Japan invades China for the second time in history. The Chinese army was making sure the safety of some Chinese schoolgirls of a convent during one of such Japanese invasions. The soldiers fought till death. John Miller, a funeral director came to bury the dead body of the priest who tasted an war death. He was forced to play the role of the priest of the convent and to rescue the girls from there. He took the responsibility either by his morality or by his love to Yu Mo, one of the prostitutes who were also trying to escape from the city ‘Nanjing’ or both. The twelve prostitutes and a boy of that convent named George; altogether these thirteen flowers of the city finally found a way that eased the task of Father John!
